Currently, few studies address the environmental impacts caused by marine shrimp farming in Sergipe's mangroves. This study aims to identify and characterize the most relevant environmental impacts related to marine shrimp farming in the estuary of Vaza-Barris River, São Cristóvão-SE, and relate them to the licensing process of this activity. In addition, we propose some sustainability indicators that may help reduce the environmental impacts observed. To this end, we examine the literature and the licenses issued for this activity in Sergipe, and construct PSIR indicators. Among the main impacts caused by shrimp farming in the area, we note the removal of native vegetation, mishandling, improper disposal of wastewater, introduction of foreign species and the spread of disease. In order to handle this activity in a sustainable manner and in accordance with the legal instruments, it is crucial to regularize and provide proper information to shrimp farmers.
