The contamination of underground water by nitrates are due the non-controlled use of fertilizers and, the disposal of animal rejects and urban or industrial wastes. These activities could cause health risks to children and pregnant, and due this, the amount of drinking water is limited around the Brazil. The methodologies for nitrate removal include ion-exchange, reverse osmosis and, electrodialysis. Regarding these problems, there are a tremendous interest in the developing of alternative technical for water treatment that drives the operations for cheaper and effectiveness process concerning the nitrate removal. In this way, currently, several proposals have been evaluated. The aim of this article is to divulgate the problems related to nitrate contamination of fresh water, affecting the quality of drinking and, the technologies which could be applied to this environmental and, public health problem.
