Social and environmental vulnerability in Natal municipality, RN, BR

Abstract

The city of Natal / RN presents risk areas due to the occupation of spaces that have legal restrictions and / or physical-natural and the lack of urban development, increasing vulnerability of the population living in them. The research aimed to map the areas of social vulnerability and natural hazards in Natal, taking into account the interrelationships between social vulnerabilities and exposure to different natural hazards. According to the methodology used to prepare the Environmental Vulnerability Index the classification of risk areas and the degree of vulnerability of these made themselves from the morphodynamic processes; and organization of the Social Vulnerability Index became a multifactorial analysis drawing on data that observing the presence of social disadvantage in the census tract level. Then, with the overlap of these two indices, it elaborated the Environmental Vulnerability Index. This research spatialized risk areas indicating the degree of vulnerability of individuals potentially exposed to natural hazard.
