Method riam use in the assessment of environmental impacts of tannery

Abstract

Tannery is a high pollution potential activity. Therefore, its installation or operation requires an environmental impact assessment, according to the Brazilian regulation. In this sense, this article craved the evaluation method ‘The Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM)' in tanneries operating in Brazilian territory. The results showed that the RIAM is a suitable alternative tool when applied in tanneries, as it allowed, in addition to the identification, assessment, assigning values and qualification of impacts in a simplified and understandable way, pointing out the weakest aspects in the environmental licensing process that require greater attention as mitigation of adverse impacts.
